Deepen your snow knowledge

snow.news delivers expert insights into snow science, snowpack conditions, and what they mean for water, climate, and winter recreation.

Welcome to snow.news, a free newsletter for readers who want to understand snow—how it works, how it’s changing, and why it matters.

Each week, I distill the latest research, data, and reporting on snow, with a focus on the American West. I offer clear explanations of water issues, climate change, alpine ecosystems, winter recreation, and more.

All of my content is free. I offer a paid tier for readers who want to support my independent journalism.

I’m Mitch Tobin, a science writer, multimedia journalist, and avid skier/snowboarder based in southwest Colorado.

I created this newsletter because snow has shaped some of my life’s most joyful—and harrowing—moments, sometimes on the same day.

My goal is to make snow science accessible and pursue snow journalism that informs, entertains, and sparks curiosity.
